The Amethyst Sunbird male appears all-black, but in good light shows an iridescent green fore crown and violet purple throat, shoulders and rump. Lacks pectoral tufts; no eclipse plumage. Female similar to female Scarlet- chested Sunbird, but throat and breast paler and less heavily streaked; supercilium starts at base of bill (not above eye). Nomad and local migrant in woodland, forest edge and gardens.
