Dust Devil Launches Umbrellas High Above Florida Beach

A dust devil disrupted a beach day, sending umbrellas and other items high into the air on Blue Mountain Beach in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, on Wednesday, August 7. Robert Lloyd captured this video from the second story of his family's house overlooking Blue Mountain Beach. "I heard screaming outside through the hurricane proof doors. When I went out on the balcony I saw dozens of beachgoers pointing and screaming," Lloyd said. He described the scene as "chaotic" as the wind lifted umbrellas, rafts, floats, and bodyboards into the air. According to the https://www.weather.gov/fgz/DustDevil National Weather Service (NWS), dust devils form in areas of "strong surface heating," typically under clear skies and light winds. "Even though they are generally smaller than tornadoes, dust devils can still be destructive as they lift dust and other debris into the air. Small structures can be damaged, and even destroyed, if in the path of a strong dust devil," according to the NWS. (Footage by Robert Lloyd/Storyful via Getty Images UGC)
