Tofuku-ji Temple, which was founded in 1236, is the head temple of the Tofuku-ji School of Rinzai Sect of Zen Buddhism. Tofuku-ji Temple is one of the most popular spots for Kyoto's beautiful autumn foliage. The temple is also noted for its excellent dry landscape gardens arranged with a fine blend of stones and moss, which are located in the Hojo, the former living quarters of the head priest. The gardens are relatively new, having been built in 1939 by Mirei Shigemori, a famous garden designer. The unique thing is that there are four gardens surrounding the Hojo in each direction.
