Fukuura Island is one of the many islands of Matsushima, but one of the only two that can be accessed from the mainland by the public. This island features beautiful scenery and hiking trails. The red bridge you see here is 252 meters long--there is a 200 yen toll for crossing.Matsushima is regarded as one of the <i>Three Great Views of Japan</i>, and this is why. Matsushima has hundreds of tiny islands located just offshore. It's beauty inspired the likes of famous poet Matsuo Basho. Unfortunately, I was there mid-day and had a lot of glare from the sun, but I'm sure this would be absolutely outstanding at sunrise. The oysters of these waters are also prized--the peak of the season is right now. Matsushima has many other cultural elements (some of which I will try to post soon) which is why it is often referred to as the Koya-san of Eastern Japan.<i><b>Fukuurajima. Matsushima, Miyagi.</b></i>
