The mosque houses the tombs of Prophet Muhammad, Caliph Umar, and Caliph Abu Bakr. During prayer times, the mosque becomes densely crowded with worshippers. Masjid al-Nabawi, which has undergone several restorations over the centuries, is recognized as the second-largest mosque in the world.
