Hammersmith Bridge Bombing

Police and curious onlookers at the scene of an unsuccessful attempt by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) to blow up Hammersmith Bridge in west London, 29th March 1939. The attack involved two devices, one of which was thrown into the Thames by a passing hairdresser, Maurice Childs. The second damaged some of the bridge's girders. The attack was part of Seamus O'Donovan's S-Plan, or Sabotage Campaign against the UK. Eddie Connell and William Browne were later convicted of the bombing. (Photo by George W.
