The City of Napier celebrated the first official Art Deco weekend since COVID-19 and Cyclone Gabrielle caused cancellations. Cyclone Gabrielle, which hit Hawke's Bay between Feb. 12 and 16 in 2023, had a devastating impact causing extensive and widespread flooding due to rapidly rising rivers, resulting in a loss of life and significant damage to infrastructure and the environment. The region experienced a period of extreme devastation, with decimated residential and commercial areas, leaving over 70,000 residents without essential services and connectivity, and resulting in long-term effects that are still being felt across the community.
