BELFAST, UNITED KINGDOM: A Northern Bank employee displays examples of bank notes 07 January 2005 that will be recalled in Belfast due to the recent robbery of the Northern Bank that netted 22 million pounds (31 million euros, 42 million dollars). Police today blamed the Irish Republican Army (IRA) for a major bank robbery last month in Northern Ireland, triggering concerns about efforts to revive the peace process in the British province. Chief Constable Hugh Orde said his investigation had shown the IRA was responsible for the audacious December 20 robbery of the Northern Bank in Belfast that netted 26.5 million pounds (38 million euros, 50 million dollars). On the basis of police investigative work and evidence collected, "in my opinion, the provisional IRA were responsible for this crime," he told journalists.
