Addressed To “Juliet, Verona”, Thousands Of Letters Arrive From All Over The World

VERONA, ITALY - NOVEMBER 20: A member of the Juliet Club's team of volunteers replies to a letter sent to Juliet in Via Cappello 23, which is today known as “Juliet’s House” on November 20, 2017 in Verona, Italy. The story of the Juliet Letters started in the 1930’s when Ettore Solimani, the guardian of Juliet’s Tomb, began gathering the first letters people left at the grave and, moved by this phenomenon, he started replying, thus becoming the first “Juliet’s secretary”. Addressed to “Juliet, Verona” thousands of letters arrive from all over the world and a team of volunteer’s known as ‘Juliet’s Club’ now reply to each and every one of them in the name of the most famous romantic heroine in literature. Each letter is read, translated, answered by Juliet’s secretaries and then kept in an archive, that contains thousands of love stories and countless words of love. Tourists visiting the city which acted as the location for William Shakespeare’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ensuring that it is now the fourth most visited town in Italy.
