CONAKRY, GUINEA - FEBRUARY 6: General scene of children riding a bus on a main street in Conakry on February 6, 2024 in Conakry, Guinea. The Republic of Guinea is a coastal town in West Africa, situated on the Gulf of Guinea, with just over 14 million population. It is predominantly an Islamic country with 90% defining themselves as Muslim. Before French colonisation in the 1890's, Guinea sat on the edge of various West African Empires including the Sosso empire of the 13th and 14th century and the Mali empire of 1235 followed by the Songhai that rose to power in 1460. Although the official language is French, 24 indigenous languages are also spoken. Guinea regained its independence in 1958, many French influences can still be seen there today.
