Youngest Known Traditional Ulos Weaver On Samosir Island

Endang Ernawati Simanihuruk, aged 11, is the youngest known traditional ulos (traditional cloth shawl) weaver working in Samosir Island, North Sumatra. Endang was born and raised in the Simarmata village of Simanindo, Samosir Regency, and began weaving at 8 years old to contribute to her parent's income. Endang weaves every day after school and earns roughly $8 from a single ulos, approximately a week's work. Today it is very difficult to find young people who want to continue the profession as a traditional ulos weaver because of the competition from factory-made weaving machines.
