LNER down express, passes through the snowy
UNITED KINGDOM - MAY 22: LNER down express, passes through the snowy landscape of a dreadful winter, 1947. Here seen passing the Coal Dues Monument about 1 mile north of Potters Bar. These monuments were erected on railways and canals entering the London area 20 miles from the GPO (later the Metropolitan police area). Coal dues dated back to 1666, the money used to finance the rebuilding of London after the Great Fire. The steam locomotive is a Class A1 4-6-2 engine, No 44 'Melton'. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
