(Original Caption) Donald Budge, of California, world's foremost tennis amateur, is pictured above with the victor's trophy after defeating his fellow-Californian, Gene Mako, 6-3, 6-8, 6-2, 6-1, to retain his national singles tennis crown. By taking the title, Budge becomes the first man in tennis history to win the Australian, French, English and American championships in a single year. Mako is Budge's roommate and Davis Cup teammate.
