Pipestone National Monument, Minnesota, USA. This monument preserves traditional catlinite quarries used to make ceremonial peace pipes, vitally important to traditional Plains Indian culture. The quarries are sacred to the Sioux and Lakota people and were neutral territory where all tribes could quarry the stone. Woodcut engraving after a sepia drawing (1881) by Rudolf Cronau (German painter, 1855 - 1939) from the book "Die Gartenlaube (The Arbor)". Published by Ernst Keil, Leipzig, 1883
