Successful Launch Puts Defense Ministry’s First Communications Satellite Into Orbit

Video footage taken at the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture on Jan. 24 shows the launch of an H-2A rocket that successfully put the Defense Ministry’s first communications satellite into orbit about 30 minutes later. The Kirameki II satellite payload on board, together with two other satellites to be launched by the end of fiscal 2020, is intended to boost the communications capacity of the Self-Defense Forces tasked with monitoring activities in the Pacific and Indian oceans. The Defense Ministry has until now relied on private-sector satellites. The 4:44 p.m. launch on Jan. 24 was the 26th successful effort in a row for the H-2A series rocket.
