Largest destroyer in MSDF joins in training exercise in South China Sea

Video footage from late June shows Japanese vessels, among them the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) destroyer Izumo, taking part in a joint training exercise with ships from the Royal Brunei Navy near the Philippines in the South China Sea. Measuring 248 meters in length, the Izumo is the largest ship in the MSDF fleet and features a flat upper deck and elevators for its complement of helicopters. The vessel is to undergo a retrofit to effectively convert it into an aircraft carrier, with the work set to be completed by fiscal year 2020.
