Underwater shot off Kikai Island,Kagoshima,Japan - stock video

Underwater shot off Kikai Island. Type of stony coral "order Scleractinia". Young two-stripe damselfish "Dascyllus reticulatus" and threespot dascyllus "Dascyllus trimaculatus". Stony corals account for the vast majority of hermatypic "reef-building" corals. The polyps, similar in structure to the sea anemone, secrete exoskeletons of calcium carbonate around their gastrodermal cavities "solenia". The two-stripe damselfish "Dascyllus reticulatus", a relative of the Japanese seabass "Lateolabrax japonicus", inhabits coral reefs in shallow waters in the tropics. The coral provides protection from predators and a place of rest. The threespot dascyllus "Dascyllus trimaculatus", likewise a relative of the Japanese seabass, is so named on account of the three white spots on its sides and head when young. Kikai Island, which neighbors Amami Oshima Island, is approximately 380 km south of Kagoshima. It is a raised coral island, which is still rising at an unusually fast rate "an average of 2 mm per year".
