Their plan, court documents say, was to go to Somalia, in eastern Africa, join with a terror group affiliated with al-Qaeda and prepare to fight any US troops that might be sent there. Last night, authorities searched the northern New Jersey homes of the two men, Mohamed Mahmood Alessa and Carlos Eduardo Almonte. The FBI first became aware of them nearly four years ago from a tip to its Web site. Then last year a New York City police undercover investigator began meeting with them and recording their conversations. Officials say the men watched jihadist videos, including messages from radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who has inspired other Americans to commit terrorist acts. They also worked out at gyms, they bought Army-style clothing, they practiced with paintball guns, but they had not contacts in Somalia, they couldn't speak the language there, they had no firm travel plans for getting there from Egypt. Nonetheless, they expressed strong hatred for the US and non-Muslims, and New York police say they could've posed a threat here if they'd been unable to get to Somalia and had brought that frustrated anger back home." 18:42:15 (EJ=:36) GFX: Graphic map of Africa highlighting Mogadishu, Somalia.
