Michel Barnier (Chief Brexit Negotiator) interview SOT (4 of 6)
Q: On Barnier's book and Shakespeare quote at beginning
- This sentence can be used for this country or for my country - and generally politicians of the world - have to be careful to keep reason - one point is very important for me now, just to say that I will draw lessons of Brexit - very serious event which was unlikely but it happened - just to say to people of my country be careful, we have to draw the lessons
Q: Lessons being populism and nationalist impulses which are in France as there are here?
- In many regions in this country Brexit expressed a social anger - popular feeling - important to understand, listen and address - I don't confuse this feeling with populism - not the same - have to address and understand anger and answer as far as jobs are concerned - in your country and my country, the public services - right migration policy - have to answer these questions
Q: On AUKUS agreements and French anger
- Can understand anger because personally as a former foreign minister in my cutlery and involved in issues of defence and external security working with UK and allies in NATO, I do not understand how this behaviour is possible between allies - being allies means trust, discussions, frankness - was not the case in situation of AUKUS - point is very serious - alliance doesn't mean allegiance, number one - alliance means trust and friendship
Q: France betrayed by AUKUS?
- France has been disappointed - trust and confidence we need is today fragile (?)
Q: Less reliable allies in London and Washington?
- Need trust and confidence - to build trust we need to build respect between us
