David Blunkett interview

David Blunkett interview; - One of the things I'm proudest of is persuading the government that identity cards and a database are necessary built on the passport which we'll have those biometric identifiers whether we have ID cards or not / If the government were to spend literally tens of millions of pounds on a completely alternative system they would have to tax people /The great advantage of ID cards is we're building on the passport and the price of the passport - I want us to succeed so when the party votes next year, as it will, on who should be leader I will of course declare / Have had an interesting week in politics and am looking forward to people reading my book as opposed to speculating on it and when they have and when I've sat down with colleagues and talked about what I can bring to the table that will be the opportunity for me to decalre - I've made it clear over the last few days that I don't think much has changed at all in terms of the leadership stakes over the last 6 weeks despite the traumas we had a month ago / Gordon Brown is a very close friend of mine / I've had the privilege of sharing his home and his wife's home and I look forward very much to staying friends with them but today is not the time to be making declarations about the next leader - I've learnt one thing if nothing else - it's best not to believe stories particularly if they appear in Sunday newspapers - I don't know whether I should be predicting any further books / One thing's for certain I won't be writing anymore diaries so if anybody is aggrieved by anything in the diary fear not this is the only and last time I shall be doing it / After the time I've had writing 872 pages people will understand why - I think enough plays, films have been made to finish me for a lifetime / If I ever write another book it will probably be about my childhood - (Asked if he'd write a political bonkbuster) I notice the word you use and I pass entirely on it
