A powerful magnitude 9.2 earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, on 26th December 2004, generating huge tsunami that inundated coastal regions around the Indian Ocean, causing nearly a quarter of a million deaths. The worst affected areas were Indonesia and Sri Lanka, but the effects were felt throughout the region. The scale bar in northern Africa shows the wave heights, which exceeded 30 metres in some areas, devastating coastal areas
