Rose window in Saint Léger Church (Eglise Saint-Léger), in Cognac, France - stock photo

The St. Léger Church (in French: "église Saint-Léger") is the largest and main church in Cognac, France. Its construction began in 1130, then it was enlarged and upgraded until the 15th century, therefore, it combines many architectural styles, a unique mix in a region where churches are mainly Roman style. It is a historical monument and was renovated again the the 19th and 20th centuries. Cognac is a French city situated on the Charente river between the cities of Angoulême and Saintes. The town's medieval quarter (in French: "Vieux Cognac") contains many unusual buildings with sometimes gargoyles and richly decorated façades. The old town was built between the 15th and 18th centuries. Cognac gave its name to the Cognac brandy, a double-distilled spirit made in or around Cognac (drinks must be made in certain areas around the town of Cognac and must be made according to strictly-defined regulations). Cognac is also situated on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela.
