A large common brown algae, Ascophyllum nodosum is commonly found on the NW Coast of Europe, East Greenland and NE Coast of North America. This was photographed in South Shores of Nova Scotia in Blue Rocks. This algae has long olive-brown fronds with series of egg-shaped air-bladders. Fronds can reach to 2 meters long. It's harvested for use in alginates and fertilizers and seaweed meals for animals and human consumption. Also often used as packaging material for shellfish, baitworm and lobsters shipments which may have accidentally introduces this algae in San Francisco Bay area as potentially invasive species. Beds are usually cut every 4 or 5 year cycle. It's also known as rockweed, Norwegian kelp, knotted kelp, knotted wrack or egg wrack.
