BULGARIA-PROTEST

A woman lights a candle during a vigil on March 5, 2013 outside the city hall of Varna, on the site where a man who became a symbol of the three-week wave of protests against corruption, set himself on fire. Plamen Goranov, a 36-year-old amateur photographer and rock climber, died on March 3 after setting himself ablaze on February 20 in the Black Sea city of Varna. Goranov's self-immolation prompted Varna protestors to adopt his cause and turn their initial anger over high electricity bills against the long-time mayor, whom they accused of corruption and favouritism towards a local business group.
