Veteraniarians provide "street medicine" to pets belonging to homeless people.

Fort Collins veterinarian Dr. Jon Gelleran emergency practitioner in Fort Collinsstarted "The Street Dog Coalition" a mobile street veterinary clinic to give free veterinary services to homeless people and their animals. The unit is staffed by volunteer veterinarians from all over the US. The vets helped provide free medical care and other services to pets of the homeless which included microchips for the animals, vaccinations of all kinds including rabies, parvo, bordatella and distemper. The animals were also tested for heart worm and if found negative were given heart worm medication. Vets also performed general check ups on all the animals. In addition, backpacks full of dog food, dog treats and hygiene kits were handed out to the homeless pet owners after their animals were checked out by the vets. More than 570,000 people are homeless in America, with an estimated double that number who may be couch surfing or are living in streets, tents, vehicles and other inhabitable places. Many are forced to carry everything they own on their backs, and for some, those belongings include a petand that pet is often in need of veterinary care, said veterinarian Dr. Jon Geller.
