He is the leading medal winner of his country, with gold from the 1500 metres in 1968 and the 3,000 metres steeplechase in 1972. He broke worldrecords at 3,000 and 5,000 metres. After his retirement he joined the IOC Athletes Commission of which he is still a valuable member.
