Kosovo Status Deadline to Expire
MITROVICA, SERBIA - DECEMBER 09: A nun walks with her dog in a Serbian Orthodox monastery Zakonice on the eve of the expiration of a United Nations-imposed deadline on the province?s future status December 9, 2007 near PMitrovica, in Kosovo province, Serbia. United Nations head Ban Ki-Moon had given the troika of U.S., E.U. and Russian mediators until December 10 to agree on Kosovo?s future status, though they reported December 7 that they had been unable to reach a common agreement. Kosovo leaders have declared their intention to declare independence unilaterally within days following the expiration of the deadline. Kosovo is still part of Serbia, though it is administered by the United Nations. It is also home to approximately 120,00 Serbs, who face an uncertain future should Kosovo, with its majority Albanian population, become independent. (Photo by Carsten Koall/Getty Images)
