Bunche smiles after receiving the news that he has been appointed a Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations August 19th. The post is said to be the highest to be held by an American in the UN Secretariat. The long expected nomination of the 1953 Nobel Peace Prize winner was announced by UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold at a press conference August 19th. Dr. Bunche, since 1946 Principal Director of the UN Trusteeship Council, will draw an annual salary of $23,000 plus $10,000 in allowances in his new post.
