Alamein Memorial
(Original Caption) Nearing completion is the Alamein Memorial to 19, 245 British Commonwealth soldiers and airman who lost their lives in the Western desert campaigns of the last war. It is adjoined by a cemetery in which the graves of 7,300 are marked by individual headstones and it lists the names of the 11,945 who were by the fortune of war "denied a known and honored grave". The land was given by the Egyptian people as a permanent resting place to the men who gave their lives to pre nerve for the West the link with the East and turned the tide of war". Picture shows: the graves of the El Alamein battlefield cemetery through an arch of the cloisters. In the background is the Cross of Sacrifice found in British Commonwealth cemeteries all over the world.
