Charly Gaul Wins Stage

Luxembourgian cyclist Charly Gaul (1932 - 2005) wins the Dolomites stage of the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) from Merano to Monte Bondone, near Trento, 11th June 1956. Gaul collapsed from cold and exhaustion after completing the stage, which saw half the riders withdrawing because of rain storms, wind and heavy snow in the mountains. Gaul went on to win the Tour.
