Bigi Spikri procession was held in Amsterdam
July 1st, Amsterdam. Bigi Spikri is a Surinamese term literally means "big mirror", it's a cozy and colorful procession in traditional costumes to commemorate and celebrate the abolition of slavery. During this annual festive parade in Suriname, people wearing native costumes walked in front of the shop windows of Paramaribo, using these as large mirrors where they admired themself. Since 2009 there is an annual Bigi Spikri parade in Amsterdam. After the procession, takes place the ceremony in the Oosterpark, where the Monument Dutch Slavery and Heritage is stand up. The cermony counts with the presence of representatives of the Cabinet, the Ministers Plenipotentiary of Curaçao, St. Maarten and Aruba, the Ambassadors of Suriname, Ghana and South Africa and the Mayor of Amsterdam.
