Inside An Italian Reception Centre For Asylum Seekers

BOLOGNA, ITALY - JULY 27: A group of asylum seekers from Nigeria pose for a picture inside the Hub CARA center on July 27, 2017 in Bologna, Italy. In an effort to address the over-crowding, violence and general poor conditions in Italy's immigration centres they have recently been re-named from CIE to CARA. The word Cara means 'beloved' in Italian but it is the acronym for Centro di Accoglienza per Richiedenti Asilo or Reception Centre For Asylum Seekers. They are also being expanded with a brand new wing being built at the Bologna Hub CARA. CARA Centres are the first place migrants are taken to after they arrive or are rescued from the boats bringing them from the African continent. The average stay at CARA is 3 days before the individuals are rehoused in long term centres. Although this former army barracks has a capacity for 800 people the current population is just under 1000 men, women and children all housed together.
