Doctor and tennis player Renee Richards makes backhand return as she practices, earlier this week, for her Sept. 1 match against reigning Wimbledon champ Virginia Wade in the 1977 $462,400 U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. The 42-year-old trans ophthalmologist, who previously played at Forest Hills as Richard Raskin, will be making her court-ordered debut at the West Side Tennis Club as a woman.
