Chut! Papa Dort!

Chut! Papa Dort!', 19th century, (1921). 'Ssh, Papa is sleeping!'. The emperor Napoleon dozes in his throne as a child holds a finger to her (his?) lips. Toys - a Punch doll and a horse on wheels - are on the stool in front of the child. Despite the dress and ringlets, this may be Napoleon's son, also named Napoleon, (1811-1832). It was common for boys to wear girls' clothes during this period. (Napoleon did have a stepdaughter, Hortense Beauharnais, who would have been about 12 when her mother met Napoleon in 1795). From "Napoleon", by Raymond Guyot, [H. Floury, Paris, 1921]. Artist Unknown. (Photo by The Print Collector/Heritage Images via Getty Images)
