Chechen separatists fight Rusxsian soldiers 05 January 1995 in Grozny, capital of the breakaway southern republic of Chechnya. Russian troops entered Chechnya 11 December 1994 with the stated aim of introducing constitutional rule in the Caucasus republic. At the end of December as Chechen leader Gen. Dzhokhar Dudayev's irregular troops were still concentrated in Grozny, Russian forces reached the capital, launched an assault on the town and gradually took control of the city.
