(Original Caption) 9/23/1944-Beaugency, France: The rifles pile up as German forces of Major General Erich Elster file past and hand their arms to two american soldiers, thus completeing the most amazing mass surrender of this war. Declining to give up to the French, General Elster marched his men, gathered from the Loire South to the Pyrenes, to Beaugency, where he surrendered to Major General Robert C. Macon of the US 9th Army.
