Anjouan, COMOROS: Anjouan strongman Mohamed Bacar is pictured during his inauguration ceremony, 14 June 2007 at the Dar Nadjah presidential palace in Mutsumadu. The Comoros archipelago comprises three autonomous islands: Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli, which all elect their own local presidents. Under a peace deal brokered after Anjouan and Moheli declared independence from Comoros in 1997, they share a rotating federal presidency and are part of a union with a federal structure. Anjouan strongman Mohamed Bacar, whose term as president ended earlier this year, defied the federal government and staged a presidential poll on June 10 in which he was proclaimed winner.
