New Zealand: Hundreds of pilot whales die after beaching in Farewell Spit

NEW ZEALAND, Farewell Spit: Hundreds of pilot whales that swam into the shallow waters of a New Zealand bay at Farewell Spit on February 10, 2017 died after they got stuck in the waterway and beached themselves on the coastline. More than 500 rescuers tried frantically to send the pilot whales back out to sea, but at least 250 died in what officials called one of the worst whale strandings in New Zealand’s history. - Credit: Newzulu / Tor Richards
